Mi investigación sigue tres líneas principales, i) la domesticación de nuevas especies, ii) la estructuración geográfica de la variabilidad genética en especies silvestres y los fenómenos que la originan, iii) el efecto de la apomixis sobre los patrones evolutivos de los complejos de especies y la estructura de las poblaciones. i) Los trabajos se centran en analizar los factores que determinan el éxito o el fracaso de la domesticación de una nueva especie. Este trabajo se centra principalmente en Paspalum dilatatum e incluye estudios genéticos, fisiológicos y reproductivos de los aspectos limitantes para la exploración de la variabilidad genética y el desarrollo de tecnologías de producción de semillas. ii) Los trabajos en esta línea se centran en especies leñosas como pitanga y yerba mate y también herbáceas como gramíneas forrajeras y papas silvestres. Me interesa particularmente el estudio filogeográfico y el efecto del cambio climático pasado sobre la distribución actual de la variabilidad genética de las especies. Se enfatiza la aplicación del conocimiento a la exploración, uso y conservación de los recursos genéticos. iii) Los trabajos en este caso se han centrado en gramíneas forrajeras del género Paspalum y me interesa particularmente dilucidar los mecanismos de generación de variabilidad. En particular me quiero diseñar estrategias para la exploración de los recursos genéticos que ha sido históricamente difícil debido a la presencia de superclones y escasa comprensión de la distribución de la variabilidad genética.
