Speak2Tweet: Google and Twitter Activated on Telephone Lines in Syria

technology technology (2020-02-13)

Following the recent shutdown of the Internet in Syria, Google and Twitter have reactivated a voice-tweet program called Speak2Tweet that would allow Syrians to get their messages out.  This service, which allows people to send a tweet by speaking through a telephone, was a system that was initially used by the companies to enable voice tweets in Egypt last 2011 when the authorities had shut down the Internet for a number of days.

However, David Torres from Google admitted that the tweet-through telephone service might not be available to most of the people because the telecommunications networks in Syria are functioning poorly due to the war. “But those who might be lucky enough to have a voice connection can still use Speak2Tweet by simply leaving a voicemail,” Torres said. The service works by dialing the following numbers on a telephone and leaving a message on the voice mail:

The service will then tweet the messages, and users can also access the tweets without any Internet connection by simply dialing the same numbers and listening to the messages. Those who have an Internet connection can log on to twitter.com.

The Internet and telecommunications lines were initially cut off by the authorities in what they called as “maintenance work” last Thursday, but activists are seeing it as a move by the regime in order to prepare for a “massacre”. AFP correspondents have noted that all Internet, telecommunications, and mobile phone networks have been cut off in Damascus, the country’s capital. Washington is seeing this as a desperate move for the regime to maintain its power.
