The latest version of SimCity, which was released March 5, required players to stay online to be able to play the game. While earlier versions of SimCity were created to be stand-alone, EA upgraded the game to include an online element to make it more realistic. With the new SimCity, players’ cities define parts of online regions on the game and share same environmental characteristics such as crime, pollution, and resources. The online element of the game is also EA’s attempt to combat piracy and illegal distribution of its games as an Internet connection is still required even if the player does not want to connect their cities to others. The gaming company is currently fixing the login delays by turning off some heavy features to smoothen the traffic within the game servers. Players have experienced as much as 30 minute delays on loading the game, with the game servers often experiencing lags, crashes, and bugs. www.mcafee.com/dellactivation

Although Amazon’s suspension of its sales on the SimCity game had lasted only for a few hours, the web retailer had put up a warning notice to inform customers about the issues that came along with the game. Amazon customers have given one-star ratings to the SimCity game in the retailer’s product page.  www.webroot.com/safeinstallation

Meanwhile, EA had apologized in several online forums and discussions for the trouble that the issues have caused the players. An EA spokeswoman disclosed that the company had recently increased its server capacity and have distributed a quick fix on all SimCity servers to improve the game play and get more people into the hype of the game. www.mcafee.com/dellactivation

Among the features that EA had turned off on SimCity are the leader board and the achievements. “Cheetah speed” or the ability to run the game at its fastest mode has also been disabled to lighten the load on its back-servers. Kip Katsarelis, the senior producer for SimCity, said that this week’s launch of the game had been challenging for the company. Despite the delays, however, Katsarelis noted a few positive things to the delay. www.mcafee.com/retailcard

Nathan Grayson, a gaming journalist for the Rock Paper Shotgun website, praised EA for constantly updating its players through Facebook, Twitter, and online discussion forums regarding the problems and what is being done to fix them. However, he raised the question why the company and other game firms are always unprepared for the massive amounts of gamers that come together during their launch dates. go.trendmicro.com/geeksquad
